Whether you are working in your backyard or an agricultural farm, pesticides can be dangerous if they are used incorrectly. To help you better understand the risks involved with pesticides and learn how to manage them safely, we offer training to develop your knowledge and pesticide management skills.

This Chemical Certification Accreditation is a nationally recognised qualification and allows the unsupervised legal use of restricted chemicals.

Training course details

Units of competency to be completed in this training course:

  • AHCCHM304 Transport and store chemicals
  • AHCCHM307 Prepare and apply chemicals to control pest, weeds and diseases

 

Who needs to be trained in pesticide use?

You must be trained in pesticide use if your work involves using pesticides. This includes the use of:

  • Herbicides
  • Insecticides
  • Fungicides
  • Bactericides
  • Baits
  • Lures
  • Rodenticides (rat poison)

Some occupations that use pesticides include:

  • Farmers, market gardeners, flower growers, landscape gardeners, nursery operators, other occupations selling produce or livestock commercially
  • Parkland or green keepers
  • Ground rig operators
  • Wood preservation operators
  • Landlords
  • Those using pesticides on behalf of a local council or government agency

 

Why is this required?

Under the Pesticides Regulation 2017, you are required to complete initial accreditation training if you use pesticides as part of your work.

 

What training do you have to complete if you work with pesticides?

If you are working with pesticides, you must complete the following units of competency which are approved by the EPA. In addition, these units which we offer at the North Coast Community College are the competency standard for ground applicator work under a ground applicator licence.

The units of competency include:

  • AHCCHM304 Transport and store chemicals
  • AHCCHM307 Prepare and apply chemicals to control pest, weeds and diseases

 

Do I need to renew my training?

To continue using pesticides and maintain your competency, you are required to renew your training every 5 years.
