Our Story
In August 2022, NCCC was a successful Grant applicant of the
Department of Communities and Justice, NGO Flood Support
Program. This grant has allowed NCCC to cover course fees for
young people aged 15-18 and integrate a Regional Barista Championship for the students. The Barista Championship aims to support community led social recovery and economic development, informed by the needs of our community and local industry. This event is a first for the region and
brings community together in a fun, inclusive event for students,
family, and friends with the local coffee, producers, suppliers and
hospitality industry.

Drew is the Secretary of the Australian Grown Coffee Association. As an enthusiastic espresso drinker for decades, he became a devotee of Australian coffee grown in the Northern Rivers region. As a roaster, he is always striving to unlock the delicate flavour notes hidden inside each bean. He delights in a perfect pour and looks forward to seeing what the students will be presenting on the day. Drew is also a graphic designer and a keen sailor.

Monique Hartley – Partnerships/Traineeships & Employers (NCCC)
Monique’s first job after finishing high school is working as a barista in the McDonalds McCafe, where her love for making coffee, and latte art sparked. She enjoyed the fast-paced work environment and the thrill of satisfying customers with the perfect brew. Following that experience, Monique worked in various roles in the hospitality industry in various pubs and restaurants. The love she has for working with people evolved to working in the aged care sector – where she stayed for the next 12 years. Monique’s had the pleasure of watching some learners at NCCC undergo their barista training, and she’s really looking forward to seeing the students put their new skills into action!
